Optically anisotropic topical hemostatic agents containing plant polyphenols

For prevention of internal rehemorrhage in limited clinical settings, it is important to develop effective topical hemostatic formulations and monitor their hemostatic process without optical labeling. Thus, we developed optically anisotropic liquid crystal/plant polyphenol-based hemostatic coacervate for clear identification of blood coagulation process. Spontaneous generation of “polyphenol-blood physical barrier” on the tissue followed by green colored visualization of liquid crystal apparently showed termination of blood coagulation.

Molecular rationale for the design of instantaneous, strain-tolerant polymeric adhesive in a stretchable underwater human–machine interface

In this study, we report an instantaneous polymeric adhesive with high strain tolerance (termed as iPASTE) even in a stretchable human–machine interface. The iPASTE consists of two biocompatible and eco-friendly polymers, linearly oligomerized green tea extracts, and poly(ethylene glycol) for densely assembled networks via dynamic and reversible hydrogen bonds. Based on the strain-tolerant adhesion of iPASTE, a subaqueous interactive human–machine interface integrated with a robot arm and a gold nanomembrane strain-sensitive electronic skin can precisely capture a slithery artificial fish by using finger gesture recognition.

Tissue-adhesive biomaterials have been attracted for hemostatic agents, wound closure, and other applications to multifunctional medical devices. In particular, we have developed hemostatic polymeric biomaterials for surface coating of medical tools/devices and controlling external/internal bleeding on surgical procedures. Our research scope is highly effective to solve challenging issues of delayed hemostasis from patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, advanced cancer, or hemophilia, patients taking aspirin and undergoing chemotherapy/cerebral surgery, and rare case patients with Ebola virus infection.
